ABOUT FLOURISH DRAMA CLUB
“Growth Lies Beyond The Comfort Zone”
OUR AIMS:
These aims are achieved through a structured programme of speech & drama activities delivered in a fun, energetic & supportive environment. Every child is made to feel welcome & valued & is encouraged to “have a go”.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
LOWER PRIMARY
(5 to 8 years):
Our youngest children are natural performers, full of energy, imagination, and creativity. They can also be a bit anxious to try new things so it’s important that these youngsters enjoy their drama club experience from the start.
To this end, Flourish classes provide a safe, fun & supportive environment where they can express themselves in the unique, uninhibited way only young children do. They are encouraged to be themselves whether they are shy or outgoing & are regularly praised for their achievements.
Through carefully structured speech & drama activities, children learn important social skills such as making friends, sharing their ideas while listening to others, negotiating & teamwork. They also really enjoy “dressing up” at this age so they are encouraged to bring props & costumes each week if they want to.
Weekly classes include warm-ups, speech exercises, movement to music, whole class plays & partner work creating their own stories.
UPPER PRIMARY
(9 to 11 years):
This age group have more opportunity to rely on technology to communicate with each other through texts, messaging & emails. However, the ability to speak with a clear voice & express thoughts & ideas concisely has never been more important.
At Flourish, classes for this age group include simple script work & small group activities as well as whole class improvisations & simple theatre games. Children enjoy every opportunity to create their own scenes & stories co-operatively with their friends, usually using props they’ve chosen.
Children who regularly attend Flourish classes find that the important skills they develop extend into “real life” situations. They become more confident in all aspects of life whether they are in the classroom, performing a speech, mingling at a family gathering or competing at sports.
COMPOSITE PRIMARY
(6 to 11 years)
A combined Lower & Upper Primary class involving a mix of activities to suit this wider age range.
YOUTH THEATRE
(12 years & above)
At this age, children may begin to feel self-conscious so classes focus on social interaction & teamwork through a variety of activities including characterisation work, short scripts in pairs or threes, small group improvisations to create TV ads, monologues & theatre games which involve spontaneity & imagination.
At Flourish, we encourage our students to be themselves & to be brave enough to express themselves in whatever way makes them comfortable. Our weekly classes provide a friendly & relaxed space for these older children to try something new & have some fun.

ABOUT ME
I am a qualified primary school teacher with over 25 years teaching experience. Since 2008, I have been running my drama club in the beautiful Bay of Plenty. During that time, hundreds of children have “flourished” as a result of the amazing speech & drama programme I have delivered.
I’m passionate in my belief that if a child has the self-confidence to step outside their comfort zone & take a risk, they can achieve anything they dream of. Creative children are more likely to enjoy academic success & go on to become our future leaders. The pride on a child’s face when they achieve something they thought they couldn’t is PRICELESS!
